IOSH Managing Safety course at Burnley College
Workplace safety IOSH training is a vital part of how we build leadership and protect our people at Vital Heating Solutions. We’re proud to share that our General Manager, Joanne, has successfully completed the IOSH Managing Safety course at Burnley College. Her achievement reflects our commitment to continuous learning and safety excellence.
In this article, we explore what the IOSH Managing Safety training involves, what Joanne learned, and why it’s so important for us as a business.
Why IOSH Managing Safety Matters
Health and safety are key to running a professional and efficient service. IOSH Managing Safety is designed to give managers the skills and knowledge they need to manage workplace risks effectively. For us, it wasn’t just about compliance. It was about building a culture that cares.
We chose IOSH Managing Safety because:
- It focuses on real world safety leadership
- It helps managers understand legal and moral responsibilities
- It provides practical tools for creating safer work environments
Joanne’s decision to lead by example and complete the course shows how seriously we take safety at every level.
What Joanne Learned
This course is designed to provide the tools and core knowledge required to help individuals handle health and safety and remain safe on site. Joanne completed the IOSH Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) for Construction Workers training, which covered a wide range of essential safety topics tailored to the construction industry.
Key learning areas included:
- Health and safety issues specific to the construction industry, and how to protect employees, contractors, neighbours, and the public
- The basics of local law and how it applies to workplace safety
- The development and importance of risk assessments and method statements
- Site requirements for welfare provisions for construction workers
- Recognising and managing hazards on construction sites, including working at height and in confined spaces
- Site environmental responsibilities such as managing waste and protecting local ecology
Joanne worked through the official IOSH SHE workbook, which served as both a learning aid during the course and a practical reference guide for future use. This resource is already proving valuable as she applies the training across our operations.
A Leadership Milestone
Joanne’s completion of this course marks a significant moment for our company. As General Manager, her role touches every area of our operations from commercial installations to domestic services. With IOSH training under her belt, she’s now equipped with a stronger understanding of how to lead safety first thinking across departments.
She’s now:
- Leading internal discussions around safety planning
- Helping managers carry out more detailed risk reviews
- Introducing refresher toolbox talks for operational teams
Her achievement is already having a visible impact across the business.
What Is IOSH Managing Safety ?
IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health) is the leading body for safety and health professionals. Their Managing Safety course is widely recognised as a standard for workplace safety training for team leaders and managers.
Key course elements include:
- Legal requirements for health and safety
- Common workplace hazards
- Risk assessment frameworks
- Active monitoring techniques
The course also includes a practical assessment, which Joanne completed successfully.
Strengthening Our Culture of Safety
Safety has always been part of our culture. From boiler installations to reactive maintenance, our engineers work in varied environments that carry real risks. We’ve always relied on strong planning, clear communication, and regular training. But with Joanne’s new qualification, we’re ready to take things further.
We’re now:
- Reviewing all site risk assessments
- Enhancing staff induction materials
- Launching a monthly safety spotlight series
Her leadership has helped us move from reactive safety to proactive planning.
