The Rise of David Heap

From Accrington Market to National Energy Specialist

The Relentless Rise of David Heap

From Market Stall to National Energy Specialist

David Heap’s journey into business began not in a boardroom, but on the bustling stalls of Accrington Market, where he started working at just 15 years old.

By the time he left school at 16, David was already balancing full-time work on the market with a mechanic apprenticeship gaining hands on experience and work ethic that would become the foundation of his future success.

Though he completed a year in mechanics, David quickly realised it wasn’t his long-term path. He applied for roles in engineering and, at 18, began a new apprenticeship with East Lancs Coach Builders in Blackburn.

Embracing Engineering

This marked the beginning of his journey into commercial vehicle body building, a discipline that demanded early mornings, technical precision, and full-time commitment. To make it work, David gave up his early morning and late evenings and weekend market job and fully embraced engineering.

The four-year apprenticeship proved pivotal. It provided David with technical skills and discipline that, though he didn’t know it at the time, would play a critical role in his next transition: commercial plumbing and heating.

By 22, David was ready for a change and a challenge. Determined to move into heating and ventilation engineering, he self-funded his training by working long hours, using saved income to finance upskilling courses.

He juggled his skilled trade job with unpaid work placements, evening courses, and voluntary training opportunities. “I used my holidays to study and worked overtime to pay for it all,” he recalls.

This drive paid off. At 24, David launched his own business as a self-employed contractor. His ambition was crystal clear from the outset: build an empire, support his family, and prove that hard work and engineering expertise could take him far. “I’ve always aimed high. I’ve never been phased by hard work or technical challenges,” he says.

In the early years of running his own business, David worked 6–7 days a week, often clocking up over 80 hours. But by 25, he recognised the need to scale sustainably. He began taking on apprentices and hiring skilled labour to grow his team and lighten the load.

Founding Vital Heating Solutions

In 2017, at the age of 34, David officially launched Vital Heating Solutions, transforming a run-down mill unit into a professional hub for a growing team.

The space underwent continuous refurbishment and expansion, eventually evolving into a full-service operation with dedicated office staff and technical support to ensure a seamless customer journey.

Scaling a business of this nature is no easy feat, but David attributes Vital’s success to a few key traits: relentless determination, engineering precision, and an unwavering commitment to doing things the right way. “In the early days, I was still doing 60-hour weeks with barely a break, just to meet demand,” he says.

David’s perfectionist approach quickly set the company apart. Customers routinely commented on the quality and cleanliness of installations. By investing in energy-efficient, future ready systems, Vital Heating not only met regulatory demands it helped clients significantly reduce energy costs and increase capital expenditure.

A Vision Beyond Heating

With operations now run by a growing leadership team, David has stepped back from day-to-day engineering work to focus on strategic growth. The company is now positioned to take on high-volume contracts across:

  • New Gas technologies
  • Low Carbon solutions
  • Renewables
  • Refrigeration and ventilation
  • Electrical
  • Business management Systems
  • Construction
  • Large scale system integrations

In line with this vision, David spoke at the Lancashire Net Zero Conference in June, a testament to his evolving role as a national voice in the energy space.

Students focused on robotics, wearing protective goggles, symbolizing teamwork and education in technology.

“We no longer see ourselves as just heating engineers,” David explains. “We’re national energy specialists. To lead in this space, we need to invest in training, innovation, and long-term partnerships.”

This thinking leads to the early-stage development of a new Training Centre of Excellence at Vital’s base at Friendship Mill.

Once designed and implemented the centre will serve as a dedicated hub for training the next generation of professionals in low-carbon and high-efficiency systems.

David and his leadership team are currently working closely with Burnley College, even helping shape its curriculum in line with skills required at Vital Heating Solutions. Vital is now assembling to take on several apprentices annually that gives them hands-on, structured learning.

New Director of Business Transformation

As Lucia Arnone, Director of Business Transformation who has recently joined us at Vital, puts it: “We don’t want apprentices just standing around making brews. We give them meaningful goals and real-world experience. They leave here with confidence and a strong career direction.”

Investing in Local Talent

Despite Vital’s national reach, David remains deeply committed to supporting the local community. Joining the Burnley Bondholders network was a deliberate move to raise the company’s profile among local students, schools, and businesses.

“We realised we were getting more interest from Salford and Lancaster than from Burnley,” Lucia says. “That needed to change. We want local young people to see a future here; not feel they have to move away to succeed.”

Vital’s HQ in Read is more than just an office, it’s our hub of innovation, growth, and opportunity. It’s where our engineers, office staff, and future leaders come together to build something bigger than themselves. Designed to inspire and empower, the space reflects our core values: precision, progress, and purpose. From the shop floor to the boardroom, it’s a living example of how we blend traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge innovation and it’s just the beginning of what’s to come. At Vital, the future isn’t just green, it’s growing.

A Story Still Being Written

From a teenage market trader to a respected industry leader, David Heap’s story is a masterclass in grit, growth, and vision. But, as he’s quick to point out, the journey is far from over.

“We’ve come a long way, but we’re only just getting started,” David says. “The future of energy is changing fast, and the Vital heating team is ready to lead the way.”

We are now entering a new phase of growth, transforming from a homegrown enterprise into a thriving SME. By embracing synergy, we’re committed to supporting Lancashire businesses with innovative, low-carbon and Net Zero strategies that deliver real energy savings and sustainable impact.
